A defence from the
duplicate at Cheadle in August.
E-W Vul. matchpoints Dealer West (deal rotated)
(1) South's one
diamond shows a five card suit unless exactly 4441
(2) Non-minimum Partner leads the six of spades (second or fourth), two, queen, king. Declarer then plays seven of hearts, two, king, six and leads a diamond to the queen and partner's king. Partner plays the five of clubs, jack, queen, seven. How do you defend? Solution Counting is the most important part of defence. Here count the high card points. Partner has at least seven (ace of clubs, king of diamonds) you have four, dummy has eleven, that leaves eighteen outstanding. Declarer is likely to have most of these and also a five (or maybe six) card diamond suit. If declarer's shape is 4351, 3451 or 3361 then, unless you return a club, the defence's second club trick may disappear. The full deal
