There are plenty of
mechanisms for finding major suit fits after one and two notrump
openers, finding minor suit fits is more difficult.
Here Alan Mould and Gary Hyett demonstrated how to do it in a deal from the Northern Bridge League. After South had opened two notrump, North bid three spades, showing at least 4-4 in the minors and slam interest. South bid four diamonds to show the four card fit and North then asked for key cards. South's five diamonds showed zero or three key cards then five hearts asked for the diamond queen. The response of five spades showed the diamond queen and the spade king. Six clubs was a grand slam try showing the club king. South now bid seven diamonds with a third round club control and the king of hearts undisclosed. With twelve top tricks all this contract needed was a 3-2 diamond break, and there were good chances even on a 4-1 diamond break. Gary and Alan were one of only two pairs to bid this slam across all three divisions of the Northern league, the other pair being Tom Slater and Alec Smalley. |
