This deal is from the
Lancashire Swiss Pairs event at Brierfield.
South arrived in five clubs on the above auction, West leading a spade to East's jack. This was rather a revealing play, since after East's initial pass, it located the position of the minor suit honours. On a heart switch declarer won, finessed a club and ruffed another spade, then a further club finesse and another spade ruff with the club king left the following position.
Declarer now cashed
the top hearts and played ace and queen of diamonds, West won and
played another diamond, ruffed in dummy, declarer now drew the last
trump and cashed the winning heart. There was a slight inaccuracy
in declarer's play at the end, cashing both hearts would have failed if
West had a doubleton heart. Declarer should only cash one heart
and then discard the other top honour when drawing the last trump with
the ace to unblock the suit.
