A
deal from a Manchester online league match.
Dealer N E-W Vul.
After
some optimistic bidding, particularly by North, you
reach a dodgy contract of six hearts.
West
cashes the ace of clubs and switches to the seven of
spades. You try the ten from dummy but East
covers with the jack and you win with the ace.
How
do you play to make this slam?
Solution The
first problem is not to lose a trump trick. So
a diamond to dummy and the ten of hearts covered by
the jack, then another diamond to dummy to lead the
nine of hearts this is covered by the queen and
ace. It is important to play the ten and nine
of hearts from dummy so that you can reach the right
end position.
Now
draw the last trump and run your heart and club
winners to reach the end position below.
When you cash the club king throwing the spade
queen from dummy East is caught in a spade diamond
squeeze. For all this to work you needed the
queen and jack of hearts onside and a three-two
heart break, and East to have five spades and four
diamonds or the diamonds to split three-three.
