This
deal is from the annual event in Mersey in memory of
John Armstrong.
This
deal featured the winners Jackie Pye and John
Holland sitting South and North respectively.
After
Jackie opened one heart and rebid two hearts over
John's one spade response, John jumped to four clubs
to show heart support, a club control and slam
interest.
Then
Jackie cue bid four diamonds and John signed off in
four hearts. Jackie however had a very good
hand for her bidding so far so checked on key cards
and bid the slam.
On
a heart lead Jackie won the nine in dummy and played
to set up the spades, ace of spades, spade ruff in
hand, then a heart to the jack and a spade ruffed
high. The last two spades in dummy were now
good, so Jackie was able to play a trump to dummy
drawing the last trump, two spades throwing diamonds
and the ace and another club for twelve tricks.
As
the cards lie any reasonable line of play makes
twelve tricks and everyone did make twelve, though
Jackie's line obviated any finesses.
Jackie
and John scored a top as they were the only pair to
bid the slam.
Thanks
to John Holland for reporting this deal
