Nicholas
Greer played his first face to face bridge for 16
months at Manchester Bridge Club.
He
reports this complicated deal.
East
decided to defend four spades rather than bid five
hearts.
West
led the ace of hearts, ruffed in dummy.
Nicholas
decided to play the king of diamonds to try to get
to hand. East won the ace and played another
heart (ace and another spade would be better).
The
second heart was ruffed in dummy and the king of
spades led and won by East who erred by playing a
diamond, won in dummy.
Nicholas
now set up the diamonds by playing the queen and
ruffing one in hand.
The
position now is as below
Now,
to make the contract legitimately declarer needs to
finesse the club eight. However, Nicholas was
unsure of the position of the club ten, so played a
club to the jack and a winning diamond from
dummy. East needs to trump this, but he threw
a club. Now the last diamond was trumped by
East while Nicholas threw a club. East was
endplayed; a spade would allow declarer to draw
trumps and win the ace of clubs, whereas a heart
would be ruffed in dummy and the ace of club lead
would pick up East's trumps with a trump coup.
