Another
deal from the MCBA Swiss Teams.
What
would you open with the East hand at favourable
vulnerability?
With
his extreme distribution Barry Myers deemed the hand
worth five clubs.
This
gave South a close decision, he chose to bid five
spades.
North
felt that his hand was a raise to six spades,
despite the club king jack holding probably being
useless.
Looking
at the North and South hands this seems to be a
reasonable, if not great, slam to be in.
However,
East was able to produce a Lightner double for an
unusual lead. This convention is fairly well
known, but occasions for its use are rare.
Rodney
Lighton, sitting West, was not hard pushed to find
the heart lead, Barry trumped it and cashed the club
ace for one down.
