Another
deal from the MCBA Swiss Teams.
Looking
at the East West hands which game would you want to
be in?
Probably
no game is good enough odds, but four hearts has
better chances than five clubs and three notrump
would need a lot of luck.
After
West opened one club, North overcalled one spade and
East bid two spades to show a sound raise to three
clubs.
South
doubled to suggest spade support and an honour in
spades.
West
thought that his crisp fourteen count was just worth
a game try, so bid three hearts to show something in
hearts. With no spade stopper East West could
not play in three notrump, so East showed three card
support in hearts. West guessed that this was a
better contract than five clubs, so passed.
North
led a diamond, West won, cashed two top hearts and
then played the club ace.
With
the kind club layout West had no further difficulty,
he cashed another top heart and played on clubs.
An
initial spade lead is more testing, but West should
still prevail. He trumps the third round of
spades and plays two top hearts and then clubs.
When
South ruffs a club he has no more spades to play,
but if he had, West could ruff in hand, cross to
dummy with a diamond and draw the last trump.
