Another
slam deal
from the Higson Cup final.
Here
after North opened one club, which could be a short
suit, East found an effective preempt of four
spades. The St Titus South now had a difficult
choice. With North likely to be short in
spades his clubs were probably a genuine suit, but
how good were they? South decided to rely on
his excellent heart suit and guessed to bid
slam. On a spade lead he was able to ruff a
spade in dummy, take the heart finesse, play a club
to hand and then draw trumps, losing only to the
trump king. In the other room North and South
finished in five clubs, so a useful 13 imp swing to
St Titus.
