Just to show that everything doesn't
always go well for columnists in real life. From a Cheadle Hulme
duplicate in
November. I opened 1NT, partner, Manchester's hard working chair
Irene Davies, transferred to spades which East doubled, I jumped
(perhaps unwisely given my heart holding) to three spades to show the
fit and that ended the auction. West, Hari Gohil, led the heart
king and another heart which Gordon Bickley won and then cashed the
diamond ace. A low heart was ruffed by West, followed swiftly by
a diamond ruff, a club to the queen, a diamond ruff, another club to
the ace (at this point I suggested that the object of the game was for
declarer to win some tricks) and a final diamond through. I
wasn't sufficiently traumatised to forget to trump high in dummy, but
four light was a bottom for North South and a well deserved top for the
defenders.
