This deal is from a
recent round three Gold Cup match in between Raymond Semp's team (Toby
Nonnenmacher, Ken Hassell and Ian Kane) and Paul Hackett, John Sansom,
Jeff Morris and John Hassett.
Raymond as East decided to open his distributionally powerful hand one diamond, South overcalled one spade, West doubled for take out and North jumped to game. Raymond now made the next critical decision by bidding five hearts, despite holding only a nine count. This went back to North who now bid five spades, presumably as a save against five hearts. South, perhaps expecting East to have more honour cards, played East for the club honours and lost 500 points. This, along with the four spades bid and made in the other room won the Semp team 15 IMPs, a sizeable contribution to their eventual winning margin of 28 IMPs. Thanks to Raymond
Semp for providing this deal
