This deal is from a
Gold Cup match in February. Michael Newman arrived in four hearts
on
the queen of diamonds lead. The technical line is to win,
take two rounds of trumps with the queen and king and then to trump two
diamonds in dummy, hoping that the hand with long diamonds has three
trumps. The odds for this play are not good so Michael smoothly
ducked the opening lead. West blithely continued with another
diamond, Michael was able to draw all the trumps and discard a spade
from dummy on the ace of diamonds, losing just two spades and a
diamond. A flat board as decarer in the other room took the
technical line which worked.
