After a fairly simple auction you reach a good small slam.  Can you make your contract on the lead of the king of diamonds?

Solution

The answer is yes, unless the spades are splitting 9-1 or 10-0 or the diamonds 8-0.
Win the diamond lead, cash a top trump and the spade ace, then a trump to dummy, king of spades discarding a diamond and ruff a diamond high.  Another trump to dummy and another diamond ruff strips the hand to leave you with trumps and four clubs in each hand.  Now play a club.  If the clubs break 3-2 there is no problem.  If West plays low play the nine, endplaying East, who either has a singleton honour or QJ10x in which case he will be endplayed.  If West plays an honour on the first round take the ace of clubs and play a club back towards the eight, to endplay West if he started with QJ10x.
