This deal is from the
Gazette Trophy inter clubs teams of eight. After East (Alec
Smalley) opened one club and South made a very weak jump overcall in
spades West (Tom Slater) bid his longest suit and East bid three
notrump. West was now mainly interested in whether East had the
diamond ace or not. Tom decided that the best way to do this was
to improvise by bidding four clubs, ostensibly a slam try agreeing
clubs, to see if East could cue bid the diamond ace. East duly
obliged so West leapt to seven diamonds giving East the choice of red
suits to play the grand slam.
