This deal is from the last round of the excellent Swiss Pairs event held every July in Llandudno. The format is twelve eight board matches held over two days at the Venue Cymru on the sea front. The playing conditions are good and it is efficiently run by Sarah Amos.
South, Neil Thomas, reached four hearts on the above auction and received a spade lead. East won the ace and returned a club to the king. Declarer now drew two rounds of trumps and then ran the jack of diamonds to East's king. East cashed the queen of hearts and played a second club won with the ace in dummy. Neil now took two more rounds of spades and made the crucial play of ruffing a club to isolate the club menace.
This was the end position.
When Neil played his last trump, West had to discard a diamond and now the diamonds were good for the last two tricks.
