Another deal from the
Swiss Teams at Deva, this time with less success, but interesting
auctions.
These were the two auctions in one match.
In the first auction North leapt to four diamonds showing shortage and
support for spades. When East doubled South was able to use the
dark blue card to show the ace of diamonds. North now asked for
key cards and when South showed two he knew about the spade king and
bid the grand slam. A similar auction took place in the second
room where North's five diamonds was exclusion key card
Blackwood. South's five spade response showed one key card,
ignoring the diamond ace. Both Norths were hoping that South
would have a useful card, either the club king, or the heart queen or a
fifth trump. Unfortunately the slam was poor, needing trumps and
hearts to break and for the heart finesse to work and both declarers
went down.
