From
the Middlesex Congress Swiss Teams in December.
This
was the deal following the one reported on Christmas day,
so consecutive grand slams - a rare occurrence.
The
auction at our table was as below. 4NT was intended
as Roman Key Card Blackwood, but East thought it was
quantitative since West could have raised hearts to show
support and force to game. East with extras leapt to
six notrump, West decided to bid the grand now. This
is a very good slam. So long as the trumps are not
breaking four-nil, then it needs a four-two or three-three
spade break or a two-two heart break or the club
finesse. All this works out at well over 80%.
This
grand proved more difficult than last week's with only
four of 48 pairs bidding it.
