This
deal is from the pairs event at the popular Chester Congress
at the Deva club Congress in
January.
Declarer
won the spade lead and took the heart finesse. Note
that the correct way to play this trump suit is to start
with the queen, in case West holds K102.
East
won the heart king and returned a spade. Declarer drew
the last trump and tried to endplay East by playing a
diamond to the nine. However, East won the ten and
returned a diamond; declarer was unable to avoid the loss of
a trump, two diamonds and a club for one down.
Double
dummy the contract can always be made. Possibly the
most challenging lead is a club. Can you work out how
to make the contract?
Scroll
down for the solution.
Win
the club lead in hand and take the top two spades, then play
ace and another heart. East wins this and plays a
diamond to West's queen.
Now
if West returns a club, win with the ace and exit with a
club endplaying East to give you a diamond trick.
If
West return a diamond win with the ace and exit with a
diamond endplaying East to give you a club trick.
