At
one table Jackie Pye opened a weak two diamonds,
John Holland enquired with two notrump, Jackie
showed a maximum with a spade feature. John
decided that if Jackie had three hearts and the
spade ace he had enough black suit winners to cover
Jackie's black suit losers, so checked on key cards
and bid the slam.

At
our table I decided not to open a weak two with a
poor suit second in hand which led to a completely
different auction. John Currie opened one
club, I responded one diamond and John splintered in
support of diamonds with a bid of three
hearts. I showed the spade ace with three
spades and John showed a club control. Now I
had no further controls to show, but with a sixth
diamond was still interested and when John made a
further try I jumped to six diamonds. There
was nothing to the play. Jeff Smith and Rhona
Goldenfield were the only other pair to bid the
slam.
