West
leads the jack of clubs, you play low from dummy,
West wins with the king and returns the seven of
clubs.
How
do you play?
Solution
If
you play on diamonds and the clubs are 5-2 you are
in danger of losing three clubs, two spades and a
trick in each red suit before you can make seven
tricks.
Playing
on hearts is a better chance, but you will still
need three heart tricks which isn't guaranteed.
If
instead you win the second club in hand and play
the queen of spades and then play the jack of
spades when you win the third club you will
succeed when West has the ace of hearts or if East
has the ace of hearts and the hearts come in, with
some additional chances in the diamond suit if
West has no entry.
