This
deal was from the friendly match against Norfolk
earlier this month.
After
a strong notrump from Rodney Lighton (South), Neil
Thomas (North) bid Stayman and then, with no fit
found in spades, bid a forcing three clubs.
Rodney showed something in diamonds and Neil then
showed something in spades. Rodney now
supported clubs, knowing that the hearts were not
stopped. Neil made a slightly mysterious jump
to six diamonds (rather than clubs) but all was
well. On a heart lead Rodney ruffed in dummy
and played the king of diamonds followed by a small
diamond. When East played the seven Rodney
played the nine to keep a trump in dummy in case the
diamonds were not breaking. This worked very
well and he then quickly wrapped up all the
tricks. In the other room a complicated
auction failed to locate the heart weakness and
three notrump went two off for 17 IMPs to
Manchester.
