This
deal is from the Manchester Congress Pairs.
Jovi
Smederevac from Austria is a top class
international player.
She
has played in the Manchester Congress in
recent years, winning the teams event in
2020 and 2021.
This
year she played in the online congress
pairs, while visiting Australia which meant
she had to stay up until four in the morning
(but the weather was better than in
Manchester).
On
this deal she showed simple, but effective,
pairs technique.
Firstly
she jumped straight to three notrump over
East's takeout double of partner's opening
club bid.
Then
on a spade lead, she won with the king and
immediately played the ace of diamonds
followed by the nine of diamonds to the
jack.
West
won the queen and blithely continued with
another spade.
Jovi
now had twelve tricks and a shared top on
the board with Alan Mould who played the
hand the same way.
