Another
deal from the EBU Spring Fours held in May.
Phillip
Taylor chose to open the North hand with a specific
ace asking four notrump bid, willing to take a risk
on the diamond suit playing for no losers.
Here
South, Peter Grauer responded six clubs, which for
them showed two aces and Phillip raised to
seven. On the queen of spades lead this looks
easy with seven clubs, five top outside winners and
a diamond ruff in hand. However, when the
spades broke seven-one Peter had to work a bit
harder. The heart ace was cashed at trick two,
then the other top spade, ruffed and overruffed,
then ace and king of diamonds followed by a third
diamond which East could only ruff with the four of
trumps, South overruffed with the five, then another
spade ruff and a diamond ruffed with the jack left
dummy high. In the other room after North had
opened a more normal one club Lily Kearney bid three
spades, South bid three notrump and North leapt to
six clubs to end the auction. So a rather
lucky but exciting swing to Phillip's team.
