A
deal from the EBU Montenegro congress.
John
Holland sitting North found the best lead for the
defence, the four of clubs.
Declarer
won with the ace and played three rounds of spades
ditching a club while John ruffed with the seven of
hearts. John now played a club to Raymond
Semp's king and Raymond played a fourth spade,
ruffed by declarer with the ten while John threw a
diamond. Declarer now crossed to the king of
diamonds and played a trump to the queen and
king. Now another club from John was ruffed by
Raymond with the jack and overruffed with the ace
leaving John's nine as a winner. Nice defence
and clearly declarer could have guessed better, but
John was surprised to make three trump tricks from a
holding of K97.
