Another
deal from the Tollemache qualifying weekend in
November.
After
the simplest of auctions Gary Hyett played one
notrump from East.
A
spade was led to the king and a second spade
returned to the queen and ace.
South
now switched to a low diamond to the queen and
ace. Gary now played a club to the queen and
ace and another diamond came back.
Gary
now cashed the top clubs hoping for a three-three
break, but found South with four clubs. He
cashed another top diamond to discover that South
probably started with a 4234 distribution.
Needing one more trick he could now play a heart to
the ace and a heart to the queen. If North had
the heart king then the heart queen would be his
seventh trick, whereas if South had the heart king
he could cash two black suit winners but would have
to concede a spade trick to East at the end.
