This
deal is from the MCBA congress pairs.
North
decided to leave his partner in one spade instead of
rebidding one notrump to show a weak notrump hand.
West
led a diamond to South's queen.
South
attempted to draw trumps in the hope that he could
set up a spade trick before the defence switched to
hearts, in effect trying to play the deal in
notrump.
A
spade to the ten was won by East with the ace and he
quickly switched to a heart.
Now,
playing to draw trumps would mean losing to all the
pairs who played in notrumps, so South decided to
play on reverse dummy lines to see how many tricks
he could generate.
After
winning the heart ace he ruffed a heart, diamond to
the king, another heart ruff, then a couple of
rounds of clubs and a final heart ruff.
Now
a top diamond with everyone following and the final
diamond was ruffed in dummy for the tenth trick when
East could not overruff.
Ten
tricks in spades outscored nine tricks in notrumps
for a rather fortunate near top, when most pairs
played one notrump.
