Another
deal from the Tollemache Final
At
the end of this auction East (Nicholas Greer)
doubled the final contract on the grounds that EW
have the majority of the high cards and it looks as
though the opponents are struggling to find a decent
fit.
On
a club lead declarer won and played the spade king
from hand. This seems to East to indicate that
declarer has a singleton king of clubs, or else he
would have played a spade from dummy. Nicholas
now played the nine of diamonds to the ten, jack and
ace. Declarer pitched a heart on the ace of
clubs and tried another club, ruffed by East with
the five of diamonds and overruffed by South with
the queen. Now another spade ruffed in dummy
and another club ruffed by East while South
discarded a heart. At this point a heart to
the queen would allow West to draw trumps leading to
four down. Nicholas was unsure who had the
heart queen so he cashed a heart and forced declarer
with another top heart. Phil Taylor, West, was
able to draw trumps and cash out for three
down. Getting 500 was an excellent
score. Several tables played in three diamonds
(some went four off), but no-one else doubled.
