This
deal is from the Goldstone Cup semi-final between
Phil Taylor's Silver and Black and Catherine
Draper's Griffins.
North
South overcame some vigorous pre-empting to reach a
good slam in spades.
West
led the seven of hearts which was won in dummy,
South discarding a club.
The
ace of spades was now cashed revealing the bad trump
break. It looks as though South has two trump
losers now, but Peter Grauer found a line to make.
First
he played three rounds of diamonds ruffing on table,
then a heart ruffed in hand and another diamond ruff
in dummy followed by a second heart ruff.
Now
his trumps were the same length as West's.
After two top clubs he ruffed a club in hand, West
could overruff, but then had to lead away from the
spade queen and Peter was home. In the other
room declarer in the same contract started the
spades by playing the king and finished up two down.
In
a high scoring match The Griffins just prevailed.
