This
deal is from the EBU's Spring Fours
South
arrived in six hearts after an auction lost in the
mists of time.
West
led the nine of diamonds to East's queen and
declarer's king.
If
trumps break then twelve tricks are easy by way of
two spade ruffs in dummy.
However,
when declarer cashed the king of hearts West showed
out of trumps.
Declarer
now showed good technique by crossing to dummy with
a club and leading a spade.
It
was difficult for East to duck this, though maybe he
should, hoping that partner's lead of the nine of
diamonds showed something in spades.
Now
declarer was able to make, ruffing two spades in
dummy and discarding one on the king of clubs, while
crossing back to hand with club ruffs.
