This
deal is from the Regional Final of the Garden
Cities, with Tom Dessain North and Rodney Lighton
South.
South
opened with one diamond and on hearing a response of
one spade, splintered with three hearts to show
spade support and a singleton or void in
hearts. North now did well to cue bid four
clubs, evaluating his hand as suitable for a slam
try with the fifth spade, no wasted values in hearts
and good distribution. South, now interested
in a grand slam, tried four diamonds, but when North
had nothing further to cue bid settled for six
spades.
This
is a reasonable contract, which Tom had no trouble
making when the diamonds broke. Rodney and Tom
were the only pair to bid this combined 23 point
slam.
