This
deal is from the Corwen Trophy
You
choose to lead the nine of hearts, declarer
plays low from dummy, the king from partner
and the ten from declarer. Partner now
plays the seven of diamonds to the five and
your queen. What do you play now?
Scroll
down for analysis.
It
looks as though declarer is 1354 shape with
the queen and jack of hearts, the king and
jack of diamonds and the ace (and possibly
queen) of clubs. To make his hand
worth a three notrump bid he probably has
the ace of spades. So switch to a
small spade to set up some spade tricks
before declarer can knock out the ace of
diamonds. Declarer now misguesses the
clubs and you emerge with two spade, one
heart, two diamond and a club trick for two
off and a good score. In fact declarer
was 1444 shape.
