The
annual Swiss Pairs weekend in Llandudno is a popular
event in a nice holiday location.
This
year it moved to a pleasant new venue - the
Craig-y-Don community centre. This meant that
the bridge players could watch the various games of
tennis and croquet between rounds. There were
a number of interesting slam deals.
When
West opened with a weak two in spades North doubled
intending to bid diamonds next to show a very strong
single suited overcall. East raised to three
spades and South bid his longest suit. When
North showed his strong hand with diamonds South,
with a huge diamond fit, cue bid spades and North
was easily worth a jump to six diamonds.
There was nothing to the play North quickly made
thirteen tricks for a joint top with three other
pairs. Nobody reached the grand slam.
Other tables had to deal with more vigorous
opposition bidding. Here is the bidding from
another table.
When
West opened with a three level pre-empt and East
raised to four South bid four notrump to show the
minors. North is really worth a shot at six
diamonds now knowing that his partner can hold at
most one spade, but only bid five diamonds a
contract reached by 11 of the 20 pairs.
