Another
deal from the Tollemache qualifying event. Tom
Dessain opened one spade as North, Rodney Lighton as
South bid two diamonds which was game forcing.
Tom rebid his spades and Rodney decided to show
spade support on Qx rather than show a heart feature
with three hearts. A series of control bids
followed by Roman Key Card Blackwood led to six
spades by North. Note that this is an
excellent contract mainly needing spades to break
3-2. However, Bill Souster as West had good
reason to think it wasn't making and doubled for
+300 to E-W.
Bill
Souster was a Manchester player about 30 years ago,
who moved away and has recently taken up playing
again. He was a maths teacher at Manchester
Grammar School as is Tom Dessain.
