Another
deal from the Tollemache qualifying event with Gary
Hyett West and Michael Byrne East.
Michael
upgraded his 19 count and opened two notrump.
Gary transferred to spades, doubled by North for the
lead. When Michael passed the double to deny
three or more spades, Gary introduced diamonds and
after a couple of control bids they played in six
diamonds, but the bad spade break doomed this
contract.
Six
diamonds is an excellent contract needing only
reasonable breaks. Only three pairs bid six
diamonds, two of them played by East. Here
North made a Lightner double and on a spade lead
ruffed. The slam can no longer be
beaten. To beat the slam South has to ignore
the double and lead a red suit.
