Another
deal from the Tollemache final.
The
auction was as above. East's four diamonds was
intended as lead directional, West's double of four
spades a little dubious.
East
won the diamond lead and then erred by playing a
second diamond. When South ruffed with the
seven and West failed to overruff she drew the
correct inference and dropped the spade king
offside. But she still had to lose two clubs
and a heart, so went one off. If East switches
to a heart at trick two declarer may still get the
trumps right on the grounds that East didn't play a
second diamond for some reason but it is more
difficult.
Many
pairs "saved" in five diamonds or five hearts over
four spades.
