This
deal is from the Tollemache Final.
West
started with the six of hearts. Hoping that this was
from length South tried the ten from dummy which held the
trick, East playing the nine. What do you play now? Scroll down for solution.
If
you start on clubs immediately and the defence have a club
trick, they will continue with hearts and the spades will be
blocked so that you can't make your spade ace. It is
essential to play the spade king at trick two and then play
on clubs. If the defence win a club trick and switch
to diamonds or spades you will have to hope for a layout
where they can't stop you from making nine tricks. The
full deal is below, West continued with hearts after winning
the club queen and declarer had nine tricks, but there was
nothing the defence could do after the initial lead.
