This
deal is from a Goldstone quarter final match earlier this
month.
East had an interesting rebid problem over the one spade response which he solved by splintering in his lower singleton. After a couple of control showing bids West used Roman Key Card Blackwood to check for key cards and the trump queen.
On the lead of the jack of diamonds from North declarer won and played a trump to dummy finding the 4-0 break. He now played a heart back to the king and discarded the club loser on a top diamond. Now when he played the heart queen South had to ruff, else declarer would just draw trumps and make all the hearts. A club return was ruffed in dummy and declarer could draw the trumps and run the hearts.
In the other room the auction was essentially the same and again a diamond was led, but declarer lost his way in the play and went one off.
It
looks as though the ace of clubs lead will beat six spades,
but declarer can draw all the trumps, play a heart to hand
and then run spade and diamond winners to squeeze North in
hearts and clubs.
