Another
deal from the Green Point Pairs.
North's
three diamond showed a mixed raise i.e. four
card trump support and around 7-9 points.
When
East showed a good hand by doubling three
spades, West decided that passing in the
hope of beating the contract was his best
chance of a good score on the board.
West
led the three of diamonds to East's king,
South following with the six. Now East
returned the jack of spades, declarer
thought about this for a while and played
the king. You win the ace of spades,
what now?
Scroll
down for analysis.
It
looks as though declarer will guess the
trumps correctly by finessing the nine if he
has the chance. If you can force the
dummy twice though he won't be able
to. So return a diamond, declarer will
ruff in dummy and try to get back to hand by
playing a heart, East can win this and play
ace and another club after which a third
round of diamonds forces dummy to ruff again
and now West will make his ten of spades for
two down.
In
practice West missed this defence, but +200
was a joint top, forcing dummy would have
gained one match point
