Another
deal from the Pachabo Final.
Tom
Dessain played three notrump from the South hand.
West
avoided the spade lead which would have given
declarer a relatively easy nine tricks as the cards
lay, instead leading the three of diamonds to the
eight, jack and queen. Tom now played a spade
to the jack. It seemed likely that the heart
king was offside so declarer played to eliminate
clubs and then endplay West. First he played a
low club won by East, who returned a diamond.
Another low club was won by East and another diamond
returned.
This
was the end position. Declarer cashed the
minor suit aces forcing a spade discard from West
and then ducked a spade to West who had to lead from
one of the major suit kings. In the other room
three notrump by North went off on the club king
lead for a gain of 12 imps to Manchester.
