The minors
This
deal is from the Inter Cities League held every
Wednesday on BBO.
David
Barton, West, did well to lead the five of clubs,
trumped by Alec Smalley sitting East.
Alec
now returned a heart which declarer ducked, David
won the heart trick and gave Alec another club ruff
to beat the contract by one trick.
Declarer
can make the contract by winning the ace of hearts
at trick two and playing the jack of spades,
discarding the queen of hearts from dummy to cut the
communications between the defenders' hands so that
they can't get a second club ruff. This is an
example of a scissors coup. Here it only works
because East has all the top spades.
Thanks
to Jeff Smith for reporting this deal
