Deal of the WeekSpring FoursThe EBU's prestigious double elimination event takes place over the bank holiday weekend from 3rd to 7th May. Manchester players involved are Michael Byrne on the Knottenbelt team, John Holland and Alan Mould on the Penfold team and Phillip Taylor and Nicholas Greer on the Taylor team. Results will be on the EBU web site. Some matches will be on BBO vugraph. Face to Face Summer LeagueEntries are now open on the MCBA entries site for a face to face Summer League to run from May to September. It is hoped that teams will play 4 or 5 matches over this period. Please enter by May 10th. League and Goldstone Update April 28thIn division one Michael Byrne's St Titus team lead having played six, winning five. The Griffins (Catherine Draper) are second having won five out of five. The critical match between the top two has yet to be played. In division two congratulations to Mike Hart's North Star who won with Eddie Thornton-Chan's Petersfield second. In division three Four Dummies (Barbara Eastabrook) lead with seven wins out of eight, Howard Rosemarine's Help are second and can overtake the Four Dummies with a good win in their final match. In division four The Transfers are in first place having played all their matches. Manchester Misfits are second with three to play. In the Goldstone semi-finals, Phil Taylor's team lost narrowly to Catherine Draper's Griffins, Michael Byrne's St Titus beat Mike Hart's The North Star to set up the usual final. World Bridge Games TrialsTrials for the World Bridge Games Open Team took place from 26th to 29th April at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club. Michael Byrne was playing on the Knottenbelt team with Kieran Dyke. Despite a late surge the Knottenbelt team finished third in the round robin phase and thus failed to reach the play offs on the final day. Michael and Kieran were, however, the best pair on the cross imp scoring. Results are on the EBU web site. Festival of BridgeClick here for news of an event held by Bramhall members as part of the charity fund raising for the Festival of Bridge National League FinalManchester won the C Division of the Northern Bridge League last year so go on to represent the region in the National League final online on Sunday 2nd June. The team selected is Gil Fletcher(Capt)/Richard Acaster, Gordon Bickley/Ann Farquhar, Sally Leigh/Judith Dunkerley, Ann Thornton/Karen Jones. Higson Cup and Plate FinalsThe multi-team, handicap finals of these competitions took place at Bramhall on Sunday 21st April for the teams who had survived the knockout rounds. Thanks to Paul Beckwith for organising and Stuart Davies for directing, also to Bramhall for hosting the event. In the Cup Inverted Minors (Jeff Smith, Rhona Goldenfield, Joy and Irving Blakey) won ahead of St Titus when the handicap was taken into account. In the Plate event Ashton United won, their handicap moving them up to first place from fourth on raw scores.

Manchester Green Point Swiss TeamsThis event will take place on Sunday 28th July at Altrincham. Click here for details, early entry recommended as there is a limited number of places. MCBA AGMAdvance notice that the agm will be on Thursday 30th May at Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme Bridge Club. There will be the usual AGM business as well as food and wine at a suitable break and a prize giving ceremony for league division winners and others. Irene Davies is standing down as Chair after many years of service, Michael Byrne is standing down as tournament secretary, so there are a number of vacancies on the executive committee. Volunteers welcome! Hoping that you can attend (quorum is 25 members).
